   Welcome to Austin, TX
Welcome to Austin

Austin is a thriving community of almost one million people in the heart of Texas. We are the seat of the state government, the "live music capital of the world", and home to the University of Texas. We are poised at the edge of the scenic Hill Country, and at the leading edge of technology. We have an active arts and cultural scene, and some of the finest recreational resources in the country.

A mild year-round climate and an idyllic river setting in the hills make Austin a real recreational treasure. The Colorado River flows through the heart of Austin and beyond, creating a series of sparkling lakes stretching for more than 100 miles.

Town Lake borders the southern edge of downtown; surrounding the lake are more than 30 miles of trails, including the popular 10-mile Town Lake Hike and Bike trail.

Farther up the river, Lake Austin and Lake Travis attract boaters, waterskiers, windsurfers, jetskiers and scuba divers.

Often described as "the oasis of Texas", Austin has more artists per capita than any other Texas city.

We are one of only 14 U.S. cities with its own ballet, symphony and opera. Plus, there are more than 30 art galleries and museums, several local dance companies and 35 independent theatre companies. Our thriving independent film scene showcases hundreds of films every year.

Austin is also an eclectic mix of ethnic heritages and cultures. Historic structures, ethnic foods, fun outdoor festivals, and a ton of musical styles all come together to reflect Austin´s multicultural makeup.

European culture is evident not only in Austin´s historic architecture, but also in the city´s wineries and brew pubs.

The Hispanic influence is reflected in the popularity of Tex-Mex cuisine.

Spring festivals like Eeyore´s Birthday and Cinco de Mayo attract people that are nature-loving, sophisticated and laid-back -- all at the same time.

And on any given night in clubs all over town, you can hear African-America´s priceless musical contribution, the blues.

Live country, blues, folk, rock, jazz, Latino, rap and reggae are everywhere around Austin, pouring out of the city´s 100+ clubs, honky tonks, performance halls, amphitheaters and outdoor stages, including Auditorium Shores on Town Lake.
